Sorry about the lengthy post, but I've read a lot of great posts and I'm pretty sure I've got my setup wrong...
My network has two AC68U routers running Shibby 137 - one in gateway mode to handle WAN, DHCP, etc., and the other in router mode acting as a dumb AP to extend the range of my network. They're bridged via an ethernet cable from port 1 to 1.
