what's the difference between DNS forwarder and DNS proxy?

Hi,

I want to install a DNS proxy (not forwarder )on my VPS.
is PDNSD/DNSMASQ a DNS proxy or forwarder? if they have both mode, what's the parameter to make it working as a proxy?
