Weird bug/feature with dhcp static entries

I have a pair of wrt54gs v1/v4 that I only use for DHCP since the tomato interface is awesome for that. I'm running Shibby's Tomato Firmware 1.28.0005 124 ND VPN. But I recently discovered that they couldn't reach the internet and can't even ping the gateway. Pinging other local IPs are ok and the DHCP server functionality is not affected.

After much troubleshooting and many false leads, I discovered that in the Basic > Static DHCP/ARP/IPT section, I have a entry for the default gateway...
