Well the RT-N16's warranty period was coming up and since the N-antenna hasn't worked for a year, it was time to bring it back to the shop to replace it under warranty.
Not sure if keeping it in a warm cabinet over the fridge in the summer accelerated it's demise, but I'll be smarter about it next time.
So I had to resurrect another old WRT54GL as the main router. I already run a wrt54gl as an access point via ethernet, and it's rock solid. I wanted a N-spec access point for that...
